Papers of Cephas Thompson and family, 1822-1862.

The papers of the portrait artist Cephas Thompson include a journal in 2 v. (1822-41; 1841-56) noting daily activities, weather and farming matters, a ledger with entries of expenses and income (1826-38), a volume entitled "Memorandum of portraits" listing the names of those who sat for Thompson 1806-16 in Alexandria, Va., Bristol, R.I., Richmond, Va., Savannah, Ga., Charleston, S.C., and Middleborough, and loose papers consisting of misc. accounts and receipts (1824-53) and a watercolor plan of a meetinghouse interior (1st Congregational Church of Middleborough?). Also included in the collection is a poem-sketchbook of Marietta Tintoretto Thompson, a miniaturist (Killingly and Brooklyn, Ct., ca. 1827) containing verse mostly copied from Byron, Scott and Shakespeare and small pencil drawings of human figures. The Athenaeum also has three loose sketches and her artist's palette. The collection also contains a sketchbook of the artist Cephas Giovanni Thompson (Italy, ca. 1854-57) and loose sketches depicting landscapes, village scenes, monuments and Italian peasants. Finally included in the collection is a small group of letters (1855-62) of Cephas Thompson's youngest son, Julius.
